The Queen of Dark is definitely back. This review may be a bit biased simply because I am a HUGE Pepper Winters fan. First Debt is the second book in the Indebted series and is not a standalone.
The writing in this book kept me on edge from the first paragraph all the way to the end. The plot was thick with tension and raw sensuality yet was very easy to follow. There are no lulls in this story. From the moment Jethro decides to go hunting for Nila to everything else after he catches her, this book is breathtaking and simply oozes primal emotions in all their glory. Fear, strength, survival instincts, willpower and most prominent: lust.
Nila's strength and determination is not only admirable considering her circumstances, but a far cry from the meek girl we met in Indebted. All the layers that develop within Nila are impeccably written , from the animal-like Nila we see in the forest to the vixen who texts with Kite, to the alpha female that makes Jethro lose control and even the submissive Nila who accepts her fate. Jethro is also a complex character. At times arrogant and cold, others he boils with unbridled lust. Jethro gives us peeks at the life he had to live within his home and that makes him hard to dislike. Since this book is told in a dual POV, I could relate to both characters and gain a deeper understanding of the plot. I can't say much more for the sake of not spoiling anything, but I can guarantee every page will make you squirm and beg for more.
Exquisitely twisted and dark, this is another must read by Pepper Winters.

A small gasp fell from my lips as his fingers kissed the paper-thin skin. His eyes held me hostage. The golden brown was now a swirling bronze, raging with the same demanding hunger I knew reflected in mine.
“This sort of reminds me of the forest,” I whispered. “The trees around us—no one else.” My words fell like petals, waiting for Jethro to crush them beneath his glossy shoe.
