Review: FLAWED by Francette Phal

Blood.

That's the only memory he carries from a childhood he does not remember. And now it is all he knows. Blood is his life.

Knox Bishop has done a lot of horrible things, all at the command of the man who holds his leash. It's a matter of loyalty for him. Allegiance to the man who saved his life when he was a child. So he goes where he is needed and does what he is told. He tortures. He kills. He kills. He tortures. It is an unrelenting cycle that he constantly craves and can never quite satisfy.

Until her.

Eighteen year old Lacey Barnes distributes her assets to fund her dreams. Medical school is the end game and she is determined to get there by any means necessary. But a family member's careless mistake derails her plans and now she must pay a price in order to save him.

She goes to Knox willingly offering him the only valuable thing she has. Herself. In doing so he allows her into his world, a world filled with darkness but rather than being scared it intrigues her. It lures her, calls to something in her that she hadn't known existed until he awakened it.

Every bit of his flaws is reflected in her and Knox will do anything to keep her in the darkness with him.

I'm not even sure where to begin with this one....
I was completely enraptured by this book and honestly, I was kind of worried what that said about me. I MUST warn you, if you are even remotely squeamish then don't even open this book. Not even the first page. If blood and gore bother you, just don't. Stay away.
Flawed is not a pretty, bad-boy-turned-good romance.
Lacey is a high school senior. And she's a prostitute. As twisted as this may sound, the author delivered this situation in a way that Lacey evoked compassion. I couldn't help but be awed by how this girl had endured so much, went through so much on a daily basis and she still kept her goal in mind to go to medical school. She wanted a better life and was willing to do anything for that. She also knew she had nothing else but her mother and brother, and those two were living off Lacey so basically she was screwed.
When her brother makes yet another mistake, Lacey has to bail him out. The price was way too high, but she gives herself up to Knox, the sociopath with serial killer tendencies I grew to love in this book. ( Don't judge ). Knox is a very complex character, yet at the same time, he is so simple. He is empty, devoid of basic human emotions. He thirsts for blood and gore. And his sights are set on Lacey. After he discovers her reaction to his torture, she weaves her way into his lifeless soul and although he sees her as his possession, we get these tiny little peeks into his background and what could very well be emotions towards Lacey.
There are so many twists in this dark story, it was impossible to put down. Some were huge, some were small and passed over like a random thought, but they gave so much insight it was hard to not focus on them as well.
So why 4 stars? First of all, the mother of all cliffhangers. And no next book in sight yet. Then there were some minor inconsistencies in the event timeline, nothing major but still noticeable.

Overall, a very dark, erotic and disturbing read apt for the dark erotica lovers.

Knox

I’m not what you would call normal. The word has no meaning to me. But I’ve been pretending to act normal. It’s something I’ve been practicing since I’ve been aware of the thrum and its significance in my life. I was seven when I first heard the lullaby. Second grade, just before recess. It happened in a squall. Nothing and then all at once. I remember everything about that day. The bell rang and the other children went to play. Not me. Never me. I always stayed behind, mostly by choice, but never contested because the other children thought I was weird. I think maybe they unconsciously knew that I was lacking something fundamental. Something they all had and I didn’t, and maybe even never had at all. Whatever it was, I was alienated, excluded from their games. But I couldn’t say it bothered me. I was indifferent to it. Katia would sometimes play with me. Yuri’s youngest daughter, my adoptive sister, kept me company when she wasn’t with her own friends. But she’d been home sick that day.
In the small classroom with its oversized, rainbow-colored letters hanging over the chalkboard and tiled number blocks littering the carpeted floor, I sat in the beanbag chair staring fixatedly at the class pet. Sweet Ms. Devon always stayed with me but she’d left for a moment. A moment to heat her lunch. A moment to speak to a fellow staff member in the teachers’ lounge. But it’d been a moment too long for me. The noise in my head had been too loud. The urge too strong. The pink-eyed little rabbit, Mr. Apples, and the yellow pair of scissors sitting blades down in Ms. Devon’s “Best Teacher” mug had been too much of a temptation for me to resist.
The pounding of my heart. The lullaby and the thrum. The latch had given way beneath my shaking fingers, soaked with apprehension and anticipation. The struggle. The frantic movement of something living, something warm, with the same accelerated heartbeat as mine grappling for life. Desperate for freedom even while knowing the inevitable hand of death loomed was intoxicating. The thrill, the excitement, the sweet seductive power. I swam in it. Like too much candy on Halloween. Too much ice cream in the summer. It had been a quick death for Mr. Apples. It had been crude. Amateurish. But ever so effective in quieting the discord of my mind.
Poor, sweet Ms. Devon came to find me on the floor of the overly-bright classroom. Huddled on the floor, covered in Mr. Apples. She’d been one to smile a lot. But I stole her smile that day and replaced it with horror instead. Her pretty features contorted like a Kabuki mask.

Francette lives in Massachusetts with her amazingly supportive husband of ten years and her darling two year old son. Reading amazing books has led her to writing and she’s dabbled in fan-fiction before self-publishing her own works. She’s constantly thinking up new stories to write and does her best work when music is playing in the background. Romance is where she’s most comfortable but she hopes to one day venture in mystery novels. She has a weakness for coffee ice cream, tropical fruits and a good glass of wine.

REVIEW

5 stars
The Queen of Dark is definitely back. This review may be a bit biased simply because I am a HUGE Pepper Winters fan. First Debt is the second book in the Indebted series and is not a standalone.
The writing in this book kept me on edge from the first paragraph all the way to the end. The plot was thick with tension and raw sensuality yet was very easy to follow. There are no lulls in this story. From the moment Jethro decides to go hunting for Nila to everything else after he catches her, this book is breathtaking and simply oozes primal emotions in all their glory. Fear, strength, survival instincts, willpower and most prominent: lust.
Nila's strength and determination is not only admirable considering her circumstances, but a far cry from the meek girl we met in Indebted. All the layers that develop within Nila are impeccably written , from the animal-like Nila we see in the forest to the vixen who texts with Kite, to the alpha female that makes Jethro lose control and even the submissive Nila who accepts her fate. Jethro is also a complex character. At times arrogant and cold, others he boils with unbridled lust. Jethro gives us peeks at the life he had to live within his home and that makes him hard to dislike. Since this book is told in a dual POV, I could relate to both characters and gain a deeper understanding of the plot. I can't say much more for the sake of not spoiling anything, but I can guarantee every page will make you squirm and beg for more.
Exquisitely twisted and dark, this is another must read by Pepper Winters.

Excerpt
A small gasp fell from my lips as his fingers kissed the paper-thin skin. His eyes held me hostage. The golden brown was now a swirling bronze, raging with the same demanding hunger I knew reflected in mine.
“This sort of reminds me of the forest,” I whispered. “The trees around us—no one else.” My words fell like petals, waiting for Jethro to crush them beneath his glossy shoe.
But…he didn’t.
Tracing one hand from my wrist, along the inside of my arm, and right to my throat, he fisted my ponytail. With intensity that stripped my soul to the very essence of who I was, he pulled my head back slowly, sensually, full of sexual power.
His eyes dropped to my mouth. “I’ll let you in on a little secret, Ms. Weaver.”
I panted, my neck straining against his hold, but I made no move to break the poignant awareness.
“You won that night, but I lied when I said it pissed me off.” His mouth dropped, his tongue licked my bottom lip with the barest of grazes.

5 star Review: Betrayal by Margaret Bingley

Title: Betrayal

Date of Publication: November 4th 2014

 Synopsis:

Set in the second half of the twentieth century, Lisa Green comes from a world of privilege, but only in the way of wealth, not in love. When a turn of events leaves her single, with an Autistic child to raise, without the means to support herself, Lisa gets stuck in an abusive new relationship that she is desperate to get out of. BETRAYAL catalogs one woman’s search for love without conditions, sexual or otherwise, in a world that seems bent against her.

 Review

5 stars

It took me a while to come up with something to write in this review that will do this book justice and still keep it spoiler free. So here goes...
Holy Mother of all plots!!!
There are so many elements to this book, its impossible to figure out where to begin. Lisa is an adopted girl raised by a couple who apparently had her life planned out. There were a lot of people in on this, except for Lisa. She was betrayed and hurt over and over again from the time she was 7 years old and beyond. The things this girl goes through are just incredible and appalling, yet realistic. There are so many layers to this story, I know I have to read it again to fully capture everything. Every character brings an immense amount of drama and plot twists with them. Every single one brings an insane amount of drama, hurt and betrayal for Lisa. Just when you think a character is bad, there's another one even worse coming. Just when you think what else could go wrong, something else does. Plot twists and surprising turns are present in every chapter. To my surprise, even with everything that goes on , and trust me when I say it's a LOT, Lisa keeps her head on straight. She manages to keep a clear mind, stay strong and my favorite thing about her, she's NOT whiny!!! Yes, she has her meltdowns once in a while, but I could absolutely get where she was coming from. In an era where autism wasn't well known or documented, she faces indescribable hardships raising her daughter. Throw in the fact that she has no means of supporting herself and depends on Neal Gueras, a man who seems to be charming and rich , yet Lisa knows has a dark and violent side. Oh yeah... Neal despises her daughter. With a passion. This alone makes for a ton of drama. That doesn't even scratch the surface of everything that goes on.
As I started reading, I quickly knew two things: it was going to be an amazing book and I wasn't going to be able to put it down.
Remarkable characters that stayed with me and evoked deep feelings in me, a superbly written story, nail-biting drama, heart-wrenching events and a very satisfying ending. A book that demanded my attention and swept me up in the time and settings.
Spectacular 5 star read.

Excerpt

Neal Gueras wasn't a patient man and he wasn't used to being held off. Despite his initial good intentions he found that sitting next to her, with her slender body close to his and her perfume drifting up to him, he simply couldn't wait. He had to kiss her, and so he gripped her tightly by the
shoulders, turned her body towards him and covered her mouth with his.

She instinctively went rigid, closing her lips against his tongue and pulling away, trying desperately to free herself. Images of Roger and Toby flashed through her mind, and she remembered how Toby would hold her by the shoulders before forcing her down on to the bed and doing things that he knew she hated for the sheer pleasure of hearing her scream.

Because he wasn't Toby, Neal had left her arms free and was totally unprepared when she slipped off one of her navy pumps and began hitting him round the head and shoulders with it.
'What the bloody hell… ?' he shouted, pushing her away and leaping to his feet. Then, looking down, he saw her crumpled up and sobbing uncontrollably, still clutching the shoe tightly in her right hand.

He sighed and turned away, knowing that it was his fault and he'd only made things worse. Lisa continued to cry, and the sound of her sobs woke Jessica who decided to join in so that when Mike tapped discreetly on the front door, Neal was highly relieved to see him.

'Carry that child upstairs and put it in the cot next to the bed,' he instructed. Mike, after one quick glance at the rumpled, tear-stained Lisa, did as he was told.

Neal sat down carefully next to her and gently removed the shoe from her hand. 'It's all right,' he said quietly. 'That was my fault and I'm sorry. I'm going to get a doctor to come and see you. He'll help you get over everything you've been through these past months. You won't mind that,
will you?' She shrugged. All that she wanted was to be left alone, which was totally unrealistic, so she forced herself to shake her head.

'Good girl! I'll be off now but I'll ring in the morning. Have a long lie-in if you can. And, Lisa… '

She glanced up at him. 'Yes?' 'I'm sorry.'

She bit her bottom lip. 'It's my fault. I'm the one who should be apologising. It was only that… '

'I do understand. Now go upstairs and get some rest. Have you any sleeping pills?'

'One or two.'

'Then take one. Goodnight.'
