Popstars, Friends, & Lovers...a dreamer's tale
Burnouts Series #2
Karen Gordon
Book Description
Publication Date: November 2, 2014
“The poorest man is not the one with no penny in his pocket, but the one who has no dream.”  – The Burnouts, Class of ‘99

For two weeks Steve Shrader lived a dream. A dream that he didn’t even know existed until he felt it. For two weeks he had love - in the form of Hello Kitty bandaids and hot soup and his best friend, MG. Then he screwed up, like he always did, and the dream he was living went away.

Now school is over, MG is gone and he’s headed down the only path he knows; drifting along and numbing himself with drugs and alcohol. But he’s seen a better life. He’s seen what he wants. He wants MG. The question is how to get to her from where he is now.

MG dreams of living large in New York City - in a kick-ass apartment with a glam fashion job and photo shoots with rich friends in magazines. She left everything familiar back home in St. Louis and everything she thought she knew about Manhattan and life isn’t turning out to be true.

When MG's dreams crumble and fall though her hands she’s left with what’s real. A real life with a real job and real problems. And maybe, real love.

Excerpt #1
When they had talked on the phone about this visit their conversation always veered toward sex. It was their default setting and both were hanging on to a lot of saved up sexual energy. But now that she was here and exhausted and hungry and wearing clothes that had been dragged across the floor of several major airports the mood between them felt different.
As soon as they were in the truck on the way to the condo, they had started talking, which they did on the phone every day, so you would think that they would be talked out and ready for nonstop screwing. They only had eight hours together before she had to be back at the airport, but the rush to fuck just wasn’t there.
While she told him about all her waiting and flights in her MG way that made him laugh, he ran her a bath. He found a big box of leftover catered stuff in the fridge from Bryce’s last party that he brought into the bathroom. He popped a mini sandwich in her mouth then grabbed one for himself.
He set the box where she could reach it and opened two Fitz’s root beers (her St. Louis favorite) as he caught her up on gossip updates that had happened in the past few days–Bryce’s latest conquest, Casey still not talking to Pat, Carrie and her twins and Nick. Then he stripped and slid into the tub with her.
The physical contact felt fantastic and added to the slowly building burn between them, but it was still secondary to their need to connect. Talking in person with gestures, touching and eye contact came first. They were reconnecting slowly, enjoying the change in their relationship that had started when he was in New York. Fuck buddies had been replaced by a deep connection that defined their relationship now.
This is what she really came to St. Louis for--this little slice of heaven that she could only get with him. He was the one man in her life who had ever fought to stay with her, even after she left him. He was permanence, even if neither had any idea where they were going. She wasn’t lost alone.
She lay with her head against his chest, resting her hands on his thighs, between rounds of grabbing little sandwiches and swigs of root beer. He started talking about general stuff going on at work then told her about working on the accounts. His voice was more hesitant, as if he wasn’t sure he was ready to share this with her.
“I started a couple weeks ago with the invoices. I don’t know. I always thought that stuff would be so hard, but … it’s all pretty logical and just creates a paper trail.”
“Yeah, well that paper trail was the highway to hell for me. I only passed accounting because I talked the professor into letting me do a paper to make up for my shitty test grades.”
“Accounting was hard for you?” He couldn’t hide his shock that he got something that she didn’t. He’d always considered himself the bottom of the barrel at school.
“I hated accounting. Never want to see that shit again.”
“Maybe it’s the way Robert explains it.” She felt him shrug. “It all makes sense to me.”
From the way he talked about Robert, MG knew Steve really admired the guy. He thought he was a really smart businessman.
When the water got too cold, they moved to his bed and had the most un-Steve-and-MG-like conversation about sheets. Bryce’s felt just like Alex’s. They both agreed that great sheets were one benefit of being rich they could get into.
Then they wrapped themselves up in those sheets and made love, slowly, taking time to stroke and caress and explore all the parts each missed on the other. Their pace was a confirmation to each other that they didn’t need to grasp at something that might disappear.
At seven-thirty a.m., Steve woke MG from a brief nap so she could have a cup of coffee and get dressed to go back to the airport. The snowstorm on the East Coast was over, but its effect, along with the Christmas holiday, was still rippling through the airline schedules. She had a nine a.m. flight to New York, through Dallas. She wouldn’t be home until around five p.m.
It was worth it. She would be willing to spend days sitting in airports fighting other passengers and gate agents again to get another eight hours with him. She was floating in a calm, happy place that only he could take her to. She left him at security with a quick kiss and an “I love you” that she felt all the way through her soul.

Playlist
It’s Been Awhile – Staind
This is the song that got me into Steve’s head. It’s so full of regret and passion from a guy’s perspective. It’s a very raw song.
Drive – The Cars
This song inspired the scene where Steve gets MG in LA. When I listen I hear about a person who sees the flaws in another, but loves them enough to be the one to show up for them.
Hey Jealousy – Gin Blossoms
This song inspired the time when MG and Steve were together in New York.
That Girl Could Sing – Jackson Browne
This was the inspiration for MG’s relationship with Daniel (although she cannot sing.)
Take Care  (featuring Rhianna) – Drake
The idea of a guy understanding that women can be sexual and have a past and it’s no big deal, he has one too—that is so Steve.  He’s not hooked up on the idea of a woman as property or something to be conquered, claimed and marked.

Burnouts, Geeks, & Jesus Freaks (Burnouts #1)
Publication Date: February 24, 2014
They’re burnouts - a little short on parents, money and plans for the future, but they’ve got each other and a whole lot of fun. With a world of crazy at home, Carrie Gould needs them to keep her sanity. To stay in their world she needs to keep dating the guy with the party house, which would be fine, if she hadn’t fallen in love with someone else.
He’s such a geek. Ben Gorman is obsessive, smart, strong-willed and on the fast track to his dream of becoming an Army Ranger. He’s also the only geek with a girl. Joelle Welker is perfect for him; a self-proclaimed Jesus freak, who is dedicated to her beliefs and to building a future with Ben. But those plans don’t include his neighbor, Carrie, or Ben’s dedication to her.
Their friendship started by chance. Their love started with trust.

EXCERPT

“I thought you looked thirsty, Mr. Burton.” Ben turned to find Councillor Sendel holding out a champagne flute toward him and accepted it with a light hearted smile. “How has Astra been treating you?” asked Councillor Sendel conversationally. “With the length of her arm between us,” grimaced Ben. Councillor Sendel chuckled softly. “I'm not surprised. I hear she took you to the library?” Ben turned to find Sendel smiling softly at him over his glass. Ben felt a prickle of unease work its way over his skin. How did Councillor Sendel know what he and Astra had done during the day? Ben tried to shake off his discomfort. After all it had been no secret that he and Astra were to explore the city together. “I guess she doesn’t like me much.” He watched Sendel take another sip of champagne. “By the way, congratulations: three terms is very impressive.” Councillor Sendel appeared to have trouble swallowing and Ben suddenly felt his sharp gaze upon him. “Thank you,” he bowed, “but compared to Corbani’s five terms it is nothing to boast of.” Ben nodded. “I hear he had no opposition for the last three terms.” Councillor Sender’s smile had a chilling undertone. “Yes, he was only opposed during his two opening terms.” He paused significantly. “He won the first election of course.” Ben knew what was expected of him and turned to Councillor Sendel with the obvious question. “What about the second?” Councillor Sendel smiled again, pleased to see that Ben knew how the game was played. “It was a great tragedy; Meron Va Dic Padis was the opposition that year but before the polls could take place he and his whole family died in a tragic accident.” Sendel’s eyes met Ben’s. “Of course, Corbani hasn’t been opposed since.” Ben understood completely and had to suppress a shiver. He had guessed that Councillor Ladron was ruthless but having it confirmed made him feel sick. “I dare say that Councillor Ladron fills his role so well that no one sees the need for change,” replied Ben evenly. “Oh, Corbani is very good at keeping… things… in their proper place,” agreed Councillor Sendel. “A man would have to have friends in high places if he wished to oppose him.” Ben met Sendel's gaze unflinchingly. “Like Senators and their sons for instance?” He smiled. “You think in such small terms, Mr. Burton: any highly placed friends would do.” He placed his hand on his heart and inclined his head but before he left he smiled again. “I hope you enjoyed Jayn’s coffee, Mr. Burton.” Ben clutched his champagne flute so tightly that the stem broke in his hand and several shards pierced his palm. It seemed that Councillor Ladron was not the only one of the councillors with an agenda. Councillor Sendel appeared to covet Corbani Va Dic Ladron’s position and was hoping that the Free Nation would help him attain his ends. Ben was fully aware that he had just been threatened. If there was one thing a Burton didn’t react well to it was threats and he’d been in the receiving end of too many tonight. “You’re bleeding.” “What?” The newcomer held out a napkin toward Ben. “Your hand, it’s bleeding.” Ben made no move to take the napkin from her, so after a small pause she took his hand between her own and, removing the flute from his grasp, studied his palm carefully. “I don’t think there is any glass in the wound,” she remarked, inspecting his hand closely before wrapping the napkin around his palm and tying the ends in a knot. “You should have it seen to, though.” Ben watched her hands as they folded the bandage neatly. “Thank you, Leda.” For a moment she stilled and when Ben looked up it was to find her regarding him pensively. “You have a good memory,” she remarked. “Or maybe you’re just hard to forget,” replied Ben. Leda raised an eyebrow, her expression unimpressed. “Did you enjoy lunch with my sister?” The question threw him, shaking him out of his calm and making his next words surprised. “Astra is your sister?” Ben frowned annoyed by the gauche betrayal of his feelings. Leda nodded pushing the dark curls flirting with her jaw line behind her ear. “Actually she’s my stepsister,” she responded in the same laconic voice. Ben studied her face trying to decide how she felt about Astra. Leda had large eyes, amber but with light green flecks, fringed with long lashes and a sprinkling of freckles over her nose that gave her an almost childlike sweetness. Her dress was black and Ben thought that she was probably four or five inches taller than Astra. But something about her was reminiscent of Astra. Ben couldn’t put his finger on what it was. Almost everything about her was the opposite of her sister: her bold manner, her physical appearance and athletic build. “Why wouldn’t Astra introduce us at the restaurant?” Leda shrugged. “She was probably terrified that I would say something highly inappropriate... so she told me to get lost.” “And would you have? Said something inappropriate I mean?” “Judging by our conversation so far, I would say her worry was entirely justified,” she returned. Ben was silent for a moment. “She didn’t want me to know you were her sister?” Leda raised her glass to him in a silent toast. “Seems like you’re not as stupid as you look.” Ben was taken aback by the remark, but there had been no malice in her voice, just the plain stating of fact. He decided to let it pass. “Why wouldn’t she want me to know you were her sister?” “Stepsister,” corrected Leda. “Guess.” Ben looked at the young woman standing next to him in astonishment: what was she up to? “Because you don't get along?” “My opinion of your intelligence just dropped twenty points.” Ben chuckled. “It’s not exactly a fair question.” “That’s because you haven’t been listening, Mr. Burton.” Ben frowned, and quickly reviewed their conversation. “Because she’s your stepsister?” he asked slowly. Leda nodded. “Do you like mysteries, Mr. Burton?” “Depends what I get for solving them,” returned Ben lightly. “In this case it will be what you don’t get,” Leda’s tone was repressive. The slight pause between them was interrupted by a new voice. “Leda, your presence is required elsewhere.” Astra’s words were flat but dismissal was obvious in the shift of her eyes. “Busted!” remarked Leda with a smile. “It was nice talking to you Mr. Burton, should you tire of my sister’s company feel free to call me.” She held out a slim black stick. “This is a contact strip: Astra will tell you how to use it.” “Leda it is highly inappropriate for you to give Mr. Burton your number.” Astra made to retrieve it from Ben’s slack grasp but he jerked his hand back out of her way. “I’ve never given a pretty woman her number back before and I don’t intend to start now.” he laughed. “Such behaviour is inappropriate Mr. Burton, I must ask you to return the contact strip now.” “I don’t think I will!” For a moment he thought Astra was going to fight him for possession of the contact strip right here in the middle of the ball room with the elite of the Tula nation looking on but in the end she just turned to her sister. “Go back to your father, Leda.” Leda nodded. “Call me, Mr. Burton.” She placed her hand over her heart and inclined her head before withdrawing. “She seems like quite a handful,” Ben remarked. “She shares your delight in rousing the hornet’s nest.” “Really?” Ben smiled, turning to watch Leda thread her way slowly through the crowd of people. “I wonder how she feels about skeletons...” Astra gifted him with a frosty glare and suggested that they both return to their table. Ben acquiesced with a chuckle, reflecting that the day might not have gone as he had planned, but the developments had nevertheless been interesting. Just interesting enough to make him want more.

Review:
3.5 stars

This book was such a pleasure to read. Light-hearted, well-paced and with the right amount of angst to make it a sexy, quick read. I loved that the characters are simple and easy to relate to. At first, I thought it would be an angsty read filled with drama, but was pleasantly surprised that it wasn't.

Overall, a good read, especially for a late night or just to relax and enjoy.
Excerpt:
“Don’t,” he said. “I want to see you.”
I closed my eyes and absorbed his words. Why was he so sweet? How did he know what to say to me?  My heart began to race and I started breathing heavily. He moved his body closer to mine and I knew I had no escape. I sunk into him, but the truth was, I wasn’t ready.
I placed my hand onto his chest. “Jaheim, I know…I haven’t been with someone since my last boyfriend. I don’t think I can…right now.”
He smiled with soft eyes. “I would never make you do something you don’t want to do.” His thumb ran across my bottom lip, but can I at least kiss you?”
“I-“ I didn’t have time to respond. His lips came crashing down on mine as he moved his hands all over my body. His mouth was hot. It had been so long since I had known this type of warmth. I thought about the last time me and-
“No. He’s gone.”
Jaheim leaned further into the kiss. I reached up to him and placed my hand on his shoulder. His tongue glided slyly across my lips. I gasped and he pulled away with a smile. I stared up at him wide eyed and blushing.
“Sorry,” I said with a rising chest. “I didn’t…that was unexpected.”
His eyes had misted over. He smiled. “I’m full of the unexpected, Natalie.”
He came back down and put his lips on mine. A strong desire awakened in me and my body pushed into his. He placed his hand on my back while I grabbed onto his shirt. One hand moved down to my thigh, slowly inching its way up my dress. I moaned in his mouth, begging him to go on.
I wanted to be careful, but I, also, wanted him. Closer and closer he came to the spot that had gone untouched for too long.
